Mean: Average of the numbers in a series
Step 1: Add up all the numbers in a series
Step 2: Divide the sum by the number of values in the series
Example: 13, 18, 16, 21
Mean = (13 + 18 + 16 + 21) / 4 = 68 / 4 = 17
Step 1: Add up all the numbers in a series
Step 2: Divide the sum by the number of values in the series
Example: 13, 18, 16, 21
Mean = (13 + 18 + 16 + 21) / 4 = 68 / 4 = 17
Median: The middle value in a series
Step 1: Rewrite the numbers in order from least to greatest
Step 2: Find the middle value
Step 3: If there are an even number of values, find the
average of the two middle numbers
Example 1: 13, 18, 13, 16, 21
Median = 13, 13, 16, 18, 21 = 16
Example 2: 22, 18, 5, 16, 24, 8
Median = 5, 8, 16, 18, 22, 24 = (16 + 18) / 2 = 34 / 2 = 17
Mode: The value that occurs most often in a series
Note: There may be more than one mode
Example 1: 13, 18, 16, 13, 21
Mode = 13
Example 2: 13, 18, 16, 13, 21, 18
Mode = 13 and 18
Range: The difference between the largest value and
the smallest value in a series
Step 1: Subtract the largest number minus the smallest number
Example: 13, 18, 16, 21
Range = 21 - 13 = 8
